Welcome to Africa!

Last night as we sat down to dinner I made sure Annikah had some food and she actually liked it and started eating!! Yeah!! She has had a tough time with the transition and the food so we were so excited she seemed to have her appetite back. I then turned to take my first bite just as a worm inched its way across my plate. Kate; the gal next to me, pointed and I quickly reacted by killing it with my napkin. Everyone at the table was grossed out but I was so hungry and with no other food options I figured, “oh well it it nothing a little salad dressing will not fix.” Jason added that it was a little extra protein- thanks J! I am sure this is not the worst food issue I will encounter but it was a reminder that I am indeed not in Kansas (or Chicago) anymore. If you think about it our food in the states is just as gross in other over processed, unhealthy additives, hormone modified ways but the live bug crawling off my plate will take some adjustment for me. I prefer to eat my food without seeing the ick within, to remain ignorant.

In other news, we cannot seem to with drawl any money here. We have been to 3 ATM’s so far with no luck, a very frustrating affair especially now that we are out of funds. Jason is off right now with a new friend to try again (Anni could not take anymore walks today). Poor girl woke up this morning after another rough night and threw up all over herself, us, and our bed. So sad! We are hoping she just is adjusting as she seems to be better now, especially after we found a swing this morning :). She is very clingy which I am sure is the result of so much change but it is hard for us as getting anything done has been challenging. As a type another teacher from Dar is reading her a book- hooray for a few minutes to myself!!

Today after lunch we all head out for a couple hour drive to Machakos where we will be for the next 3 weeks of orientation and training.

Oh! Jason just returned and he actually was able to get some money!! Yeah God! He also enjoyed looking at our account total as it is in Kenyan shillings so we are millionaires here. We are easily amused!!! Off to lunch, lets hope nothing living makes it way to my plate today 🙂
